Streatham Women’s Sewing Group was launched in October 2009 and its first session was held on 2 November at the Sunnyhill Children’s Centre. Sessions are currently held every Tuesday from 10-12am.

Since January 2010 37 women have signed up to attend the sessions and of these 22 are attend regularly. The average number of women attending each session is between 10-14.

Our youngest member - Fatima

Apart from learning a useful skill, for many of the women the sessions have provided valuable time for them to be with other women, to share information, to gain confidence and to have a respite from childcare. Many of them have begun to talk frequently about future aims and ask questions about how they can study and gain employment outside the home. The women also spread the word about the Group to others in their communities and we are getting many enquiries from women about future attendance.

We hope that the friendly and non-threatening environment of the Sewing Group will enable our members to make a first step into greater integration in British society.

We are very grateful for the support of Morley College of Further Education, the Walcot Foundation, Lambeth Council and the wonderful Sunnyhill Children’s Centre!
